Real Madrid beat rivals Barcelona for the first time on Sunday, ending a run of 18 straight defeats in the ‘Women’s Clasico’.
Real won 3-1 at Barcelona, with Scotland international Caroline Weir coming off the bench to score a late match-winning double.
Norway forward Caroline Graham Hansen had cancelled out Alba Redondo’s first-half opener for the visitors on 67 minutes and Barca thought they had gone ahead with nine minutes left, but Jana Fernandez’s goal was ruled out for offside.
Substitute Weir then put Real 2-1 up with three minutes left and sealed the shock victory in the sixth minute of injury time at Estadio Olimpic Luis Companys.
Real’s win is a surprise given that Liga F leaders Barcelona had had already beaten them four times in all competitions this season, most recently an 8-1 aggregate victory in the Copa de la Reina semi-finals.
The result sees Real close the gap at the top of Liga F to just four points, with seven matches remaining.
It is only the second time that Barca have dropped points in the league this season after suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Levante on 1 February – a result which ended a 46-match unbeaten streak in Liga F.
Real’s next match sees them take on Arsenal in their Champions League quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium with a 2-0 lead from the first leg.
