A woman has died after being hit by debris from a tree which exploded when struck by lightning in a town south-west of Sydney.
A second woman in her 40s was taken to hospital in a serious condition after the strike during a storm on Saturday afternoon.
Paramedics and a medical team rushed to the address in Cawdor about 5.30pm. New South Wales Ambulance said one woman had been fatally injured by shrapnel from the tree and a second taken to Liverpool hospital with injuries to her hands and face.
The injured woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition, accompanied by a medical team on the ambulance.
A neighbour told the Sydney Morning Herald the “one big bang” had come just as storm clouds started rolling over the rural area.
“It was huge,” he said. “It scared the life out of me.”
