As someone who writes about home organization, I’ve gotten a lot of tips from seasoned pro organizers about how to keep spaces neat and orderly—and there are a few products that get recommended over and over. Whether it’s a giant woven basket or zippered pouches, pros love these MVP products because they always get the job done and they’re incredibly versatile.
I personally own many of these products and I always feel like I’m not tapping into their full potential, so I asked a bunch of pros how they put these MVP products to use around the home—whether it’s in the kitchen, closet, bedroom, entryway, or anywhere else. Oiahomy Large Woven Basket
Amazon
Some things are too big to store on a shelf, which is where a large woven basket comes in handy. “A giant utility basket is a versatile storage solution for items like toys, blankets, sports gear, backpacks, swim bags, and even dog toys,” says Amanda Scott of Amanda Scott Home. “One client even stored outdoor cushions in a basket under her stairs during rainy weather.” The baskets also make a great drop zone for seasonal gear like hats, gloves, and scarves. Other pros use them for unused throw pillows, entryway shoes, poolside towels, and bedding.
“I love these for blanket storage on the floor of a linen closet as they don’t scratch floors and can accommodate multiples and a variety of sizes,” says Rogene Pejanovic of Breathing Space.
Amazon Basics 3-Tier Rolling Utility Cart
Amazon
I own a three-tier rolling cart and I use it for crafts—which happened to be one of the most popular uses among the pros I polled. But I’m excited to try some of the other ideas that experts shared, like a gift-wrapping station with wrapping paper, ribbon, and bags, or a mobile workstation for office supplies. Other genius ideas are a mini bar, first aid center, laundry supply caddy, mobile hair and beauty station, storage spot for watering cans and plant food, or a portable station for baby supplies like diapers and wipes. One of my favorite tips came from Jennifer Pontello, founder of The Pink Closet, who says, “It is great for outdoor eating—use it to bring your plates and napkins and condiments to the table.”
Eoout Mesh Zipper Pouch Bags
Amazon
Mesh zipper pouch bags are a great way to store small items without taking up as much space as a bin. “We recommend these often for organizing small or loose items—especially ones that need to travel, like electronics accessories, Lego sets, or office supplies,” says Stephanie Y. Deininger, founder of The Organized Flamingo. Professional organizer Shaniece Jones uses mesh bags to store bikinis, because “no one likes hunting for the matching top when you’re headed to the beach.” Other items that pros like to stow in mesh bags are batteries, pens and markers, unboxed puzzles, small game pieces, documents, cords, kids doll clothes, and hair accessories.
Simple Houseware Over-the-Door Organizer
Amazon
These are advertised as shoe organizers, but pros use them for so much more. “They are the ideal organizing tool as they are inexpensive and take up no floor space,” says C.Lee Cawley of Simplify You, who loves using these in entryways to store items like gloves, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, lint brushes, tissues, and extra charging cables. She also recommends them for laundry rooms to organize lingerie bags, stain remover, orphan socks, dryer sheets, and more. Other ideas are storing water bottles in pantries, beauty products and tools in bathrooms, and gardening tools in the garage.
YouCopia Crazy Susan Lazy Susan
Amazon
Lazy susans are a huge favorite among pros, who use them to organize oils and vinegars in the kitchen, cleaning supplies under the sink, office supplies on the desk, and daily vitamins and supplements on the counter. “In bathrooms, we love to create a ‘daily’ turntable with all our client’s favorite daily used products, keeping them front and center,” says Emily Maiocco, owner of Next Level Organizing. We also love this idea from Martha Hayes of Rework the Room: “Put a different type of snack in each section and you’ve got yourself a ‘grab and go’ station kids will love spinning around.”
Vtopmart Clear Drawer Organizers
Amazon
Pros love using acrylic drawer organizers to house small items like cords, chargers, chip clips, rubber bands, and matchbooks. “I love that they give random items, batteries, paper clips, bottle stoppers, an actual home,” says Jones. “Once something has a home, it’s easier to find it, and even easier to put it back.” In your bathroom, you can use these to organize floss, cotton swabs, makeup, hair ties, and even your toothbrush and toothpaste. You can also use them on a workbench for nails, screws, and bolts, and on shallow shelves in medicine cabinets.
Hblife Shelf Dividers
Amazon
“Shelf dividers are one of my go-to closet organization tools,” says Scott, who loves dividers because they prevent items from toppling over. “They keep stacks of pants and sweaters neat, and help separate bags, purses, clutches, and shoes. I also use them in linen closets to divide towels and bedding, and in bathrooms to organize product categories.” They’re especially great for tote bags and knee-high boots, which both have a tendency to droop. You can also use these to keep paper neatly stacked, or to create zones in shared closets.
