Untitled Art has announced the 84 exhibitors that will take place in its inaugural edition, which will run September 19–21, with a preview day on September 18, at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Last November, Untitled Art, which has run a fair in Miami Beach for 12 years, announced its plan to expand to Houston, citing a report that totaled the Texan city’s arts-related spending for 2022 at $1.3 billion, making it the largest market in the state. At the time, Untitled Art founder Jeffrey Lawson told ARTnews, “There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity that’s happening in Houston right now, and it just makes a lot of sense to bring a really good art fair to the city.”
There are 17 Texas galleries or nonprofits featured, accounting for about 20 percent of the exhibitor list. Those exhibitors include Erin Cluley Gallery, Barbara Davis Gallery, and Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino. Additionally, a portion of the fair’s ticket sales to the Rothko Chapel, which reopened in December after sustaining hurricane damage.
A number of leading galleries from around the US are also lined up to participate, including Altman Siegel and Jessica Silverman (both from San Francisco); Charlie James Gallery, Luis De Jesus, and de boer (Los Angeles); Library Street Collective (Detroit); and Half Gallery, Hollis Taggart, Marc Straus, and Yossi Milo (New York).
International dealers that will take part include Patel Brown (of Toronto and Montreal), El Apartamento (Madrid and Havana), Cecilia Brunson Projects (London), Revolver Galería (Lima), TERN (Nassau), and Lazy Mike (Riga and Seoul).
As with its Miami fair, Untitled Art, Houston will also include a Nest section, which allows for 20 galleries to participate at reduced booth prices. Those include 12.26, Martha’s, Murmurs, Megan Mulrooney Gallery, Constitución, Povos, and KDR. The fair will also collaborate with Houston institutions, like Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and the Menil Collection, for special projects that will be presented throughout the fair.
In a statement, Michael Slenske, the director of the Houston fair, said, “This is a moment when all of Houston’s top museums are in expansion mode and currently offering some of the most dynamic programming in the nation, as are the city’s emerging and established galleries and project spaces. Meanwhile there are countless world-class artists who live and work in the Bayou City. I’m just very excited to be part of this new era of growth in the city’s art landscape with the launch of Untitled Art, Houston this September.”
