President Donald Trump said on Thursday morning that the U.S. and the United Kingdom have agreed to a new trade deal.
“The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come,” Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. “Because of our long time history and allegiance together, it is a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement.”
In a Truth Social post late Wednesday, Trump said there would be a press conference in the Oval Office at 10 a.m. Thursday “concerning a MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY.” Early Thursday, Trump wrote, “This should be a very big and exciting day for the United States of America and the United Kingdom.”
The administration is set to reveal more details about the new trade agreement at the press conference, and potentially provide updates on America’s negotiations with other countries, which Trump wrote “are in serious stages of negotiation.”
Uncertainty over the administration’s tariffs announced last month have introduced significant volatility to the markets, and have caused a number of companies to retract their full-year projections.
