This Remote Forest Getaway Was One of the Most Viral Airbnbs on TikTok This Year—and It’s Built Over a Waterfall

While scrolling through social media, have you ever been stopped in your tracks by a destination so beautiful that you felt compelled to click through and maybe even book a trip to see it in real life? Don’t worry. We love that kind of behavior—and so does Airbnb, which recently compiled a list of TikTok’s favorite rentals that you’ll want to reserve ASAP. 

One of the standout options on Airbnb’s roundup was The Ellwood Box Hop in Rockbridge, Ohio. Once a humble shipping container, the structure is now a midcentury modern-inspired extravaganza and arguably one of the coolest forest getaways in the country.

“This single-story, minimalist shipping container cabin was designed to span a ravine that sits directly over a waterfall,” Airbnb wrote in its report. “Guests can even get a bird’s-eye view of the nature below through the glass floor in the living room. Its midcentury modern design offers a chic interior with vibrant decor. The stay is named after an influential Los Angeles designer of the 1970s, Craig Ellwood, who was known for his minimal steel and glass designs.”

The home, the listing adds, is perfect for up to four guests thanks to two bedrooms that are separated by a cozy common living space—it even has a fireplace perfect for cooler nights. The home also includes access to its hot tub on the deck and is filled with so much midcentury modern furniture you’ll think you’ve been transported back to the ’60s—in the best way possible. But we aren’t the only ones who think it’s cool.

“Even though we arrived at The Ellwood in the dark, we could tell it was going to be special,” one guest wrote in their review. “The sound of the creek running beneath the bungalow set the tone, but when the sun rose, we were blown away. From our bed, we saw fresh snow covering the ravine and fields—a view that exceeded all expectations. The thoughtful design, with huge windows overlooking the ravine, made it feel like we were immersed in nature.” 

And don’t worry about the home being on the smaller side. As one person shared, it has everything you need. 

“Five stars barely do this location justice,” the guest wrote. “Such a unique stay to be built into a waterfall. All the details in the house are perfectly curated to feel like a luxury getaway in a tiny house. The kitchen is very well stocked if you are looking to cook and maximize time enjoying the space.” 

But this isn’t the only Airbnb to trend on TikTok this year.
