This Miami Beach Art Deco Hotel Is Back, With a Massive Penthouse, Incredible Restaurant, and Oceanfront Pool With a ’50s Diving Board

Since its 1940 debut, The Shelborne has stood among the treasure trove of art deco glamour on Miami Beach’s Collins Avenue. Now, after an extensive $100-million renovation, the oceanfront landmark is poised for a return as The Shelborne by Proper, open for reservations on May 1.

The beachfront property — the first foray into Florida for the Santa Monica, California-based Proper Hospitality — has 251 rooms, suites, and villas, most of which have sweeping ocean views. And while the hotel got a top-to-bottom refresh, some of the property’s most distinctive architectural elements that blend the Miami art deco and Miami modernist designs have been carefully preserved for its next chapter.

“The Shelborne is an iconic landmark in Miami Beach, and we’re honored to reimagine it for a new generation of travelers,” Brian De Lowe, co-founder and president of Proper Hospitality, told Travel + Leisure. “By preserving its striking original architecture and blending it with Proper Hospitality’s fresh, contemporary approach to luxury, we are creating a space that’s both timeless and forward-looking.”

The original vision of celebrated midcentury architects Morris Lapidus and Igor Polevitzky has been thoughtfully reimagined by ADC Atelier, preserving key heritage features including the historic façade and the ’50s-era landmark diving board at the oceanfront pool.

“The Shelborne project presented an exciting opportunity to blend timeless art deco elements with modern luxury,” said Aaron David Clarke, principal of ADC Atelier. “Our focus was on respecting the building’s storied past while crafting spaces that feel both inviting and contemporary for today’s guests.”

Inside, accommodations are bathed in a soft, earth-tone color palette, featuring honed travertine floors, custom furnishings, and handwoven wall textiles. Among the oceanfront one- and two-bedroom suites on offer is the 1,700-square-foot Penthouse Suite, with a sprawling outdoor terrace and a front row view of Miami Beach. Meanwhile, two-bedroom Pool Villas are outfitted with kitchenettes and have views of both the pool and Atlantic Ocean.

On the dining front, the property’s signature restaurant, Pauline, is overseen by chef Abram Bissell of New York City’s Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park, NoMad, and The Modern. Pauline will feature dishes like lobster sancocho (a traditional Caribbean stew) with yuca fries, and swordfish ribeye for two, carved tableside.

Cocktail bar Little Torch is serving up classic cocktails with a tropical twist, like an espresso martini made with coconut-washed reposado tequila. Additional dining outlets include an outdoor pool bar, and the 4,000-square foot Lobby Bar and Café, which shows off the dazzling restoration of sweeping windows and the building’s 18th Street façade.

Among the resort’s other amenities is the iconic, palm tree–trimmed pool, a garden lounge, and cabanas, plus a 24-hour fitness and wellness center and a private beach club. Besides overnight guests, the Shelborne by Proper will welcome locals with a beach and wellness membership.

Nightly rates at the Shelborne by Proper start from $489 and you can book your stay at properhotel.com/shelborne.
