The Most Popular Burger in Each State, According to Millions of DoorDash Orders

  • DoorDash analyzed millions of 2024 orders to identify the most popular burger in each U.S. state.
  • The data reveals surprising trends in regional burger preferences, including the rise of non-traditional options.
  • From coast to coast, Americans are diversifying their burger orders more than ever before.

On May 28, we will all pause our regular activities to celebrate our most significant holiday: National Hamburger Day, which also marks the end of National Burger Month, celebrated throughout May. It would be fantastic if you could take a day off work and head outdoors to fire up the grill and throw on a few patties, but sometimes, all you have time for is delivery. And DoorDash already knows what you’re likely going to order for this monumental holiday.

On Monday, DoorDash revealed its data for each state’s favorite burger choice, based on orders from all of 2024. It examined the most-ordered burger in every state and noted that “plant-based and poultry lovers are having a moment.”

According to the findings shared with Food & Wine, “chicken burgers reigned supreme in 17 states,” including California and, more surprisingly, the beef-loving states of Texas, Florida, and Kentucky. DoorDash also found that veggie burgers were the go-to order in places like New York, Colorado, and Wisconsin, “proving that plant-based is no longer niche — it’s national.”

Turkey Burgers also got plenty of love, taking the crown in six states, including Arkansas, Virginia, and North Carolina, while cheeseburgers secured three states: Iowa, Michigan, and Maryland. Still, 10 states showed they love a classic, with the humble hamburger topping the charts in states like Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, and Nevada.

“Burgers remain a beloved staple, but what we’re seeing now is a broader definition of what a burger can be,” Cristen Milliner, a consumer trends expert at DoorDash, shared with Food & Wine. “From chicken burgers dominating in 17 states to the rise of plant-based options and turkey burgers gaining traction, it’s clear consumers are craving variety without giving up the comfort a classic brings. Whether it’s about health or flavor, the burger continues to evolve while still delivering the familiar satisfaction that makes it a staple.”

As for what people are pairing with their burgers, DoorDash said we’re all sipping a rather surprising drink: A margarita.

“ICYMI, the margarita has officially been crowned the 2025 Drink of the Summer as consumers seek familiar, feel-good classics vs. more complicated cocktails,” DoorDash shared. “When it comes to trending marg flavors, watermelon is topping the charts. Tequila, lime, jalapeño, and Tajín orders are surging across the country, proving that what’s in your glass matters just as much as what’s on your plate.”
