The Last of Us
Almost everyone is praising The Last of Us’ episode six, minus some game-players upset that a few lines were changed on a certain porch scene. After that aired, we now have some additional information from co-writer Craig Mazin that seems to alter the previously stated plans for the show’s future.
Originally it was said that because of its size, The Last of Us Part II would be split up into two seasons, two and three. Now, Mazin says even that’s not big enough. Here’s Mazin speaking with Collider:
“I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2”, said Mazin. “But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth.”
Again, it was previously said that only season 3 was needed, and now four seasons has fans questioning how this is going to play out. If season 3 is eight episodes to season 2’s seven, what is season 4 going to be?
Part II is long but that long? Many believe the seasons simply should be longer, but given how long production took just to get these seven season 2 episodes out, maybe not.
Abby
Game spoilers follow as we can assume that after a certain theater fight in the season 2 finale, the third season will focus on Abby in a way that season 2 did not at all, as the game has a lengthy story about her past and what she’s doing as Ellie begins her rampage. Key word, begins, as Ellie has only killed one member of her group and there are many others to go.
Fans wonder if the idea is that season 3 will be an extended version of the Santa Barbara story, the finale of the game, but I have to believe it’s going to be only a part of it, as they’re already rushing the base story a bit, so it would need more pre-California stuff.
Complicating all this is a revelation from Neil Druckmann that alongside Intergalactic, Naughty Dog is also working on a second, secret game that Druckmann is producing. He will not be as hands-on as other projects, he says.
Is that The Last of Us Part III? That’s unclear, but it stands to reason it could be that, or it could be something like the resurrection of Uncharted. I would be surprised if Naughty Dog launched two totally new IPs back to back as that seems like something of a risk. Though it’s not exactly like Naughty Dog makes bad games. And if it is TLOU Part III, well that’s some more HBO seasons eventually.
It does seem weird to cram The Last of Us Part I into a single season and then need three to cover Part II, even if it is somewhat longer. But more Last of Us? I’ll take it regardless.
