As NPR correspondent Emily Feng reported on the Uyghur family separated from one another because of Chinese state oppression, she learned about a mysterious figure working to keep her sources from speaking out.

In the final episode, she profiles two Uyghur men who – perhaps unwillingly – become actors within the Chinese state’s systems of control over Uyghurs. As they work to silence others, they say they’ve found themselves silenced as well.
