Student Loan Borrowers Will Face a New Income-Driven Repayment Plan Process Soon

More changes are coming for student loan borrowers enrolled in income-driven repayment plans.

The Department of Education said Monday that it is reworking the income-driven repayment (IDR) plan process. Under a new method, enrolling in the IDR plans will be simpler, and existing borrowers will no longer need to recertify their income every year, it said.

The reworked plan comes less than a month after the department reopened applications for IDR plans. The department had originally taken down the application after the administration said a court ruling in the legal battle against the Saving for a Valuable Education plan called into question other IDR plans.

The closure prevented borrowers from enrolling in the more affordable repayment options, and some were unable to recertify their IDR plans.

According to a press release from the department, more details on the new IDR process will be provided next week.
