Sonja O’Hara Has a Queer Existential Crisis After Taking Shrooms with Her Toxic Ex in ‘Snare’ Teaser

Sonja O’Hara is back onscreen with another genre-bending queer feature, this time titled “Snare.”

O’Hara made her debut feature with “Root Letter,” which starred Danny Ramirez. She later was Daytime Emmy–nominated for creating, directing, and starring in horror series “Doomsday,” with the script inspired by her being cast in Scientology instructional videos. Now, O’Hara is launching her sophomore feature “Snare” during Pride 2025, just as she also is one of the selected filmmakers to be part of the Tribeca Creators Market.

“Snare” stars O’Hara as Rowena, a mycologist studying the connection between all living mushroom biology. Yet it’s her own drug-fueled chemistry with ex Jackie (Mars) that threatens to disrupt life as she knows it.

The official synopsis reads: “Ro and Jax aren’t right for each other, but the women can’t bring themselves to separate. It is a dark kismet that each found the single person on the planet that their brains deemed to be so stubbornly desirable. Their relationship is a seesaw of abuse and manipulation. They have accepted their fate. Stoics atop the gallows. But what happens when a drug comes along that offers an end to their addiction to each other? The promise of freedom divides them further. When only Jax decides that it’s time for a change, she becomes untethered to Ro, disgusted by her very existence. But Ro can’t bring herself to fully commit to the therapy. Her lonely, unrequited infatuation will drive her to dangerous, desperate acts. As the effects of the experimental drug intensify, Ro and Jax discover that severing their emotional connections will challenge their relationship with not only humanity, but with reality.” Robert Longstreet co-stars.

O’Hara told IndieWire that films such as “Blue is the Warmest Color” and “Woman Under the Influence” led to her taking on “Snare.”

“I was driven to seek out roles that expose deep vulnerability and push envelopes,” she said. “As a queer, genre creator, this was the lens I knew how to explore that through.”

Co-star Mars added, “’Snare’ gripped me with its raw exploration of toxic infatuation. These characters’ addiction to each other drags them into terrifying darkness, transforming them into beautiful monsters in love’s name.”

O’Hara, Peter Phok, and Adam Hoelzel are shopping their narrative feature “Cottagecore” at the 2025 Tribeca Creators Market. Verve and UTA are co-repping North American sales on the film

O’Hara directs from a screenplay she wrote. The “Cottagecore” synopsis reads: When jealousy and resentment simmer during a polyamorous, Gen Z intimacy retreat, the weekend descends into violent chaos.

O’Hara is also set to direct Harvey Keitel and Rita Moreno in her upcoming psychological thriller, “Theirs.”

“Snare” is being presented at Tribeca to buyers as part of the Creator’s Marketplace. Check out the teaser below.
