Selma Blair says she’s ‘relapse-free’ and thinking about her dreams again while living with MS

The world is Selma Blair‘s oyster.

The Legally Blonde star opened up to PEOPLE while attending The Daily Front Row’s 9th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Thursday about how her improving health is making her think more about her future plans.

Blair, who was first diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018 and has been in remission since 2021, told the outlet that she is “truly relapse-free” from symptoms of the disease and is “feeling really well.”

“I am doing amazingly well. I’ve been feeling great for about a year,” she said. “But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely … I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy and getting out and going out isn’t so scary.”

As for the future, she said, “It’s funny, I haven’t spent enough time having dreams. And now it’s like, what are my dreams?”

She continued, “I think maybe since the diagnosis. You’re just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day. And now it’s like, wait, I realize I don’t know what my goals are.”

Now that she’s in a position to think about her goals, though, she shared that her focus is “much more career-oriented” and that she “would love” to get back into acting again, as well as continue advocating for people with chronic illness.

Blair, who wrote a memoir in 2022, told the outlet she would also like “to write now a young adult book,” and that she has an idea for a fantasy novel in the vein of The Secret Garden.

Since her diagnosis, the Cruel Intentions star has been open about her hope to return to the screen. She told British Vogue in 2023 that although she once feared she wouldn’t work as an actor again, she thinks “[producers] are open to it now. The reality of a set is another thing: the hours, the nights, the logistics of somewhere to curl up and reset my nervous system once over-activated. I haven’t actively pursued work in acting – it hasn’t been the right time yet – but it’s absolutely doable for me. I have to take the leap.”

In January, Variety reported that Blair had signed on for three new movies, including the Israel-Hamas war drama Stay Forte; There There, the Polish brothers’ first movie together in more than a decade; and supernatural thriller Silent.
