See the Milky Way dazzle during a lunar eclipse — May’s best science images

Plumes of smoke. This image, captured by the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite, shows smoke from the Lac du Bonnet wildfire rising above Manitoba, Canada, where it resulted in two fatalities, forced around 1,000 people out of their homes and has left some areas unrecognizable. The fast-moving blaze was one of dozens of active wildfires reported in Canada in May, as the country’s wildfire season starts to ramp up.
