Scotland clinch play-off place at curling worlds

Scotland made sure of progress to the play-offs at the World Men’s Curling Championship with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Germany.

With one game remaining in the round-robin, Bruce Mouat’s rink have a record of eight wins and three defeats, behind only host nation Canada.

Germany, led by Marc Muskatewitz, had surprised the Scots in this season’s European Championship final but found themselves trailing by three after the first end.

Mouat, seeking a fourth medal at world level, was always in control and the Germans conceded after losing two more in the seventh end.

Scotland complete their round-robin campaign against China, who are also in the race for a play-off spot after trouncing South Korea 10-1 for a seventh win on the Moose Jaw ice.

“It’s always nice to get the Q before the end of the round-robin,” said Mouat.

“We’re feeling like we’re starting to step up and play a bit better, raising our game a bit, so we feel like we’re in a good spot.

“We’ve got a tough game against China later, then into the play-offs where we’re unsure who we’re going to play yet, but we’re looking to continue that form we showed against Germany there, because that was one of our better games of the week.”

Olympic qualifying points gained from last year’s championships will be added to this year’s final total, with the top seven sides gaining qualification for Milan-Cortina in 2026, along with hosts Italy.

Those who fail to secure their place will have another chance to do so via a qualifying tournament at the end of the year.
