Sarah Jessica Parker is ‘still mortified’ about her ‘Sex and the City’ fart scene

The newest episode of Kristin Davis‘ reliably entertaining podcast Are You a Charlotte? quickly went from classy to gassy when Candace Bushnell — author of the weekly column upon which Sex and the City was based — made an appearance.

The gals soon commenced talking about the classic “bed fart” from the show’s first season, and Davis said that her costar Sarah Jessica Parker is “still mortified” over it.

The pair were analyzing the episode “The Drought,” which, if you recall, opens with Bushnell’s TV stand-in Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) cuddling up with Mr. Big (Chris Noth) the morning after an intimate encounter. (The show was not called Going to the Library and the City.)

The moment quickly moved from idyllic to honest when Carrie found herself involuntarily breaking wind. If you’d like to relive the incident, we’ve cued this up for you here:

“I remember [her] stress about it,” Davis recalled. “‘How are we gonna do it?’ Because they had to put it in post, and she was like, ‘Don’t make it too big.’ She was very stressed.”

“It’s really loud,” Bushnell fired back, then, as if lingering on something began philosophizing. “When I first watched the episode, [I was wondering] if I farted with a guy, would I be that upset about it? A lot of women would be. I think it’s mortifying for a lot of women. But I just felt like for me, it wouldn’t be that big a deal, and [I] would just move on. But I went back and I watched it a couple of times, and, you know, they made that fart really, really loud.”

While we would never doubt Bushnell’s life experience, we are left a little curious. The flatulence in question is far from silent. That is true. But would you really categorize this is as loud? It seems more like a clarinet’s toot than a tuba’s blast. Maybe there’s something wrong with our speakers.

While mostly meant as a gag, the televised flatus did come with an element of social commentary.

“I think back to [this] time, we were doing things in the show that weren’t being done on television and movies, so no wonder we were mortified as actresses,” Davis continued. She added that she and her costars often wondered “are we going to be shunned? Like, are we going to be, like, hated by the industry? What’s gonna happen?”

While the stress the actresses felt was reflected in Parker’s character, it’s worth noting that Mr. Big clearly thought Carrie’s morning report landed somewhere between no big deal and hilarious. You may recall he pranked her later that episode with a whoopee cushion.
