From the Barbie Dreamhouse to a galaxy far, far away.
Ryan Gosling has been announced as the star of a new Star Wars film, to be helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. Star Wars: Starfighter has been set for a May 28, 2027 release.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni announced the new project today at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo. Levy and Gosling later took to the Celebration main stage to tease their new collaboration.

“This is the perfect place to start this journey for us, because it’s such an incredible reminder of why we’re going to make this movie and who we’re going to make this movie for,” Gosling told the Celebration audience.
Levy added, “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
Gosling noted that the film’s “script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters.”

Star Wars: Starfighter is described as a “standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” The film will feature all-new characters and explore a period of time that has not yet been covered in the extended Star Wars cinematic universe.
Production commences this fall for a release date that will come just three weeks after another gigantic release for Disney: Avengers: Secret Wars. That Marvel tentpole rockets into theaters on May 7, 2027, and will see the return of directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who haven’t directed a film for the company since 2019’s uber-successful Avengers: Endgame.
Levy was in talks to direct a Star Wars film as early as 2022. Starfighter now joins an as-yet untitled trilogy set outside of the Skywalker Saga to be helmed by Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg.
Then there’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, a feature film installment in the journey of the intrepid Mandalorian, portrayed on the small screen by Pedro Pascal. The film, which pairs the bounty hunter with everyone’s favorite infant Yoda, will be directed by Jon Favreau and is currently slated for a May 22, 2026 release.
