There is no shortage of shoe trends dominating this season, such as vibrant, retro-inspired sneakers, slingback kitten heels, and woven flats. (Have you seen those satin ballet sneakers?) But there are two trends I can’t stop obsessing over—espadrilles and Mary Janes—and Rothy’s newest shoe combines both styles into one high-fashion silhouette you can wear all day.
I received a pair of Rothy’s Espadrille Mary Janes three weeks ago, and they’ve been on my feet whenever the unpredictable Midwest weather permits. They’re surprisingly comfortable flats and have enough structure and support to take you through most occasions. Not to mention, every little detail is simply adorable.

The espadrille flats feature classic thick stitching that loops across the midsole and upper, along with a charming chevron knit pattern swathed over the midsole. I ultimately fell for the shoe because of its Mary Jane-style strap that’s embellished with an adjustable gold buckle. The upper even displays a mesh-like appearance that adds a bit of intrigue while functionally keeping my toes sweat-free. I also love that the upper is pretty short, just skimming the base of my toes, for a more feminine finish.
I’ve returned most flats I’ve purchased recently because they were uncomfortable right out of the box and even gave me blisters by the time I stepped into the office one morning. The espadrilles, however, are a shoe I can actually walk in all day. I’ve worn them to the office, on a miles-long shopping spree, and out to brunch—and I plan on wearing them several days a week this summer.
The support is a credit to its footbed that noticeably cushions each step—there’s even additional padding at the heel for shock absorption. The EVA outsole is sturdy and has subtle treading to prevent you from slipping. The upper is made from a blend of hemp, cotton, and recycled plastic bottles, and its woven texture contributes to its breathability and style.
Like all products from Rothy’s, these shoes are made using recycled bottles (approximately six per pair) and other natural materials. Oh, and just like the other shoes, this pick is machine washable—just toss them into the wash and run on a cold cycle. The brand recommends air-drying them with a shoe tree to best keep their shape.
I jumped for a black pair, but you can also shop them in metallic gold, ivory, and cherry red. The shoes are available in whole and half sizes from 5 to 13. I found them to be ever-so-slightly large, so consider sizing down; though I do find many Rothy’s styles to run a little narrow.
These shoes toe the line between classic and trendy, making them one of the most versatile shoes to wear through summer. I envision wearing them with flowy maxi skirts, linen skorts, midi ruffle dresses, barrel jeans, and summer-friendly trousers. The options are truly endless.
I’ve been a fan of Rothy’s shoes for years, but these might take the cake as my favorite spring shoe. Grab a pair now for $149, or shop other comfortable and fashionable shoes below.
