Robert Pattinson Almost Had a ‘Mental Breakdown’ Filming ‘Die, My Love’ Dance Sequence with Jennifer Lawrence

Robert Pattinson definitely did not want to freestyle-dance for Lynne Ramsay‘s “Die, My Love.”

Pattinson told GQ in a video (below) alongside “Mickey 17” writer/director Bong Joon Ho that he almost had a “mental breakdown” amid filming a dance sequence with his co-star Jennifer Lawrence. Pattinson pleaded with Ramsay to have the scene be removed from the script, or be choreographed instead.

“I did this movie with Lynne Ramsay, and she’s a really good dancer. And Jennifer Lawrence is a really good dancer. They just find it so easy. They’re like, ‘Just dance, it’s just music playing, just dance,’” Pattinson said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have a mental breakdown when this happens. We need to either choreograph it or cut it.’ And they’re like, ‘No, just dance, stop being all freak.’ It came to the day, and I was sweating so much, the insides of my trousers, with sweat, were wet.”

“Die, My Love” stars Pattinson and Lawrence as a married couple whose relationship is challenged by an affair. LaKeith Stanfield plays Lawrence’s onscreen lover. “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “You Were Never Really Here” director Ramsay previously teased the premise of “Die, My Love” during the 2023 Sarajevo Film Festival, saying the feature is a “funny” take on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel about postnatal depression and bipolar disorder. Martin Scorsese produces the film along with lead star Lawrence. Ramsay wrote the script with Enda Walsh.

“Die, My Love” also seems to hit right in the intersection of films that Pattinson prefers: The actor told GQ that in addition to his “complicated” parts onscreen, he likes to watch rom-coms in his spare time.

“I always want to do the most complicated parts. And what I want to watch as an audience member is always love stories,” Pattinson said. “I love rom-coms. But it’s funny, everyone is so afraid of doing them because it’s very difficult. It’s difficult to come up with a concept that will feel like…I don’t know, because you literally have people [messaging on] Tinder.”

While a rom-com may not yet be in store for the star, Pattinson did hint at a collaboration with an unnamed horror director.

“I did get very frightened [recently]. I had to do a meeting with the director, and he’d done this horror movie, and I watched it, and I kept thinking that someone was breaking into my house,” Pattinson said. “And so I was sitting on my sofa with two kitchen knives, waiting for the person to come in. And then I fell asleep with them basically in my neck on the couch. […] It was probably a squirrel.”

Pattinson could be talking about “Smile” and “Smile 2” director Parker Finn, who’s mounting a “Possession” remake Pattinson is producing.

In addition to “Die, My Love,” he is next starring in Bong’s “Mickey 17” and the “Batman” sequel from Matt Reeves.
