It’s hard to top Meryl Streep’s three Oscars anchoring the cast of “Only Murders in the Building,” but the show has managed to add a collective four Oscars to its A-list cast in a matter of weeks. The latest to join the cast of Season 5 is two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger, Hulu announced on Wednesday.
She joins fellow newcomers Christoph Waltz (he’s got the other two Oscars) and Keegan Michael Key, who also recently were reported to be starring on Season 5. They of course will all be alongside the main cast of Martin Short, Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Michael Cyril Creighton.
Zellweger’s character details or any storylines about season five are being kept under wraps.
Last season’s cast of “Only Murders” was its most star-studded yet (to the point of it being bloated), including everyone from Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, Richard Kind, Kumail Nanjiani, Molly Shannon, and even more cameos and returning cast members. It’s becoming like Hulu’s version of The Avengers.
Speaking of The Avengers…”Only Murders” even had some fun with its sister Marvel brand, announcing Zellweger’s name in a photo of an on-set chair that looks exactly like the way in which Marvel has spent all morning announcing its lengthy cast for “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Zellweger just recently reprised one of her more iconic roles as Bridget Jones for “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which skipped a theatrical release in the U.S., opting instead for a Peacock exclusive release, but has made $122 million worldwide at the box office.
Season 4 of “Only Murders” missed out on any major Emmys this past year, but it did win Martin Short a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Deadline first reported the casting news.
