Award-winning writer and performer Cathy Wippell is bringing her debut solo show “Cabaret for the End of the World” to London’s Bread and Roses Theatre.
The darkly comedic play with music is set in the wasteland of a post-apocalyptic U.K., following the story of Montselier, the last surviving accordionist after civilization’s collapse. Through a series of monologues and songs, the political and natural disasters that caused the catastrophe are revealed.
The production comes to the Bread and Roses Theatre after a successful preview run at Grimfest, The Old Red Lion Theatre in October 2024.
Wippell, a London-born performer with an activist background, founded the SAFER (Students for a Fair and Educated Response) campaign while at university. She has been extensively involved in climate activism and is co-founder of Silicon Gothic, a film company that “monstifies” modern issues through genre films, working with talent including Stephen Fry and pioneering charities like River Action U.K.
As a writer, Wippell recently won best script for her short film about water pollution, “Black Samphire,” at the Film The House awards, sponsored by Netflix, Disney and Warner Brothers. The film was also featured on BAFTA albert for its sustainability initiatives and is now being developed into a feature film with BAFTA-winning Candid Broads Productions.
“Cabaret for the End of the World” marks Wippell’s first venture into playwriting. The production is described as unique in its approach to modern attitudes toward the planet, offering “a thought-provoking, culturally and politically relevant statement on people, power and respect for the natural world and each other.”
The show runs June 3-7.
