Vince Vaughn wrangling grandmas to start an Italian restaurant; the latest volume of animated stories about love, death and robots; a slick new limited series starring Oscar-winner Julianne Moore; the final season of Netflix‘s longest-running adult animated show; another installment in the popular Fear Street film franchise; and live-stream of Netflix’s hotly anticipated global pop culture and fan event are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in May.
Vince Vaughn and Susan Sarandon headline Nonnas, one of Netflix’s big feature releases in May. The Dear Evan Hansen and The Perks of Being a Wallflower filmmaker Stephen Chbosky directed the fact-based comedy feature that begins streaming May 9, and tells the story of Joe Scaravella, who decides to alter his life path by starting an Italian restaurant that hires Italian grandmothers, aka “nonnas,” as the chefs. The story is based on the real-life Scaravella, the owner of Staten Island eatery Enoteca Maria and author of the 2015 cookbook Nonna’s House. The cast also includes Linda Cardellini, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello and Campbell Scott.
On May 15, the fourth volume of Netflix’s adult animated anthology series Love & Death and Robots launches on the platform. The series, created by Deadpool filmmaker Tim Miller and executive produced by David Fincher, explores a range of genres, including comedy, horror, and sci-fi all linked to the topics of love, death, and well, robots. The fourth volume includes 10 short episodes and features episodes directed by the likes of Fincher (“Can’t Stop”), Miller (“Golgotha” and “The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur”), Jennifer Yuh Nelson (“Spider Rose”), Patrick Osborne (“Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners” and “The Other Large Thing”) and Robert Valley (“400 Boys”). The reception for each volume of Love, Death & Robots has steadily increased since volume one dropped in March 2019, with the volume three boasting a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sirens, Netflix’s big budget drama release this month, drops on May 22. The star-packed limited series from Maid creator Molly Smith Metzler tells the story of a woman who comes looking for her younger sister — only to discover she’s become ensconced in the strange world of a wealthy family. The series stars Oscar-winner Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Kevin Bacon and the always-great Glenn Howerton. The series is based on Metzler’s play Elemeno Pea, which she wrote during her time at Juilliard. It’s the first product of an overall deal Metzler signed with Netflix in the wake of Maid’s success.
On May 23, the eighth and final season of animated hit Big Mouth launches on Netflix. The series follows a group of middle school teenagers, including best friends Nick Birch and Andrew Glouberman (voiced by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney), who are struggling with the most embarrassing issues faced by young people. With its final outing, the Emmy-winning adult-animated comedy will become the longest-running scripted series in Netflix’s history.
Also on May 23, Fear Street: Prom Queen, the latest edition in Netflix’s Fear Street film franchise, debuts. The 80s-set film is adapted from author R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel The Prom Queen and stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, Ariana Greenblatt, Chris Klein, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterston. The film is directed and written by Matt Palmer, and co-written by Donald Mcleary. Netflix previously released a well-received trilogy of Fear Street films, directed by Leigh Janiak, in 2021: Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978 and Fear Street Part Three: 1666.
Netflix closes out the month with a big party for its self, live-streaming Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event, its global pop culture event tied around its content. On May 31, the sixth edition of Tudum takes place in-person at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, but will also be simultaneously live-streamed on Netflix, with the show starting at 5:00 p.m. PT/8:00 p.m. ET. Tudum, named after the iconic sound that plays at the start of every Netflix movie, series, or event, is usually chock-filled with news and exclusive reveals about the streamer’s slate, so it’s a must-see for fans of big shows like Stranger Things, Squid Game and more.
