Get ready to dance the “Magic Dance” all over again.
Director Robert Eggers, fresh off his work on the acclaimed Nosferatu, will write, along with writing partner Sjón, and direct a sequel to the Jim Henson-directed cult classic for TriStar Pictures, EW has learned. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce. Rather than a traditional remake, the project will be a sequel.
The 1986 film stars a teenage Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, whose baby brother, Toby, is taken by the goblin king, Jareth, played by David Bowie. She must triumph over a maze to get to his castle and rescue him, although she faces many strange characters and obstacles along the way.
The puppet-populated fantasy flick has become a cult classic, with fans meeting annually for a masquerade ball, like the one shown in the movie, and regular screenings at revival theaters and outdoor venues. It’s also been the subject of comic books, novels, and merchandise.
The news comes the same day that Nosferatu, which is loosely based on the story of Dracula and makes over the 1922 black-and-white film of the same name, scored four Oscar nominations. The retelling of the gothic tale is up for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Cinematography.
One day ago, it was confirmed that Eggers will direct Werwulf, which he also wrote with Sjón. Planned to arrive in theaters on Dec. 25, 2026, the movie will be set in 13th-century England and feature dialogue appropriate for the period.

Eggers has said that he prefers juggling several professional projects at once.
“The thing is, I always have a ton of things in development because you need to to survive this industry and you don’t know what is going to hit next,” he told ComicBook.com when asked in an interview published Wednesday about rumors that he would helm a new Labyrinth. “But I definitely want the next film I make to be an original movie.”
Labyrinth certainly would be that, at least if it were anything like its predecessor, which is filled with memorable characters — both creatures and humans — as well as a colorful landscape and soundtrack.
No word on whether Hoggle will make a return appearance.
