Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in Talks for ‘Single White Female’ Remake

Be careful who you add to your lease.

That’s the takeaway from 1992’s psychosexual thriller “Single White Female,” a classic of squirmy suspense that featured Bridget Fonda as a freshly single Manhattan-ite who has the misfortune of picking a clingy and awkward woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to be her roommate while she recovers from her breakup. But because Hollywood loves nothing more than putting a fresh coat of paint of the cult classics, Sony and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures are reviving the intra-apartment friction with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in negotiations to star in a remake. No word on who will direct the film — the original was directed by Barbet Schroeder of “Reversal of Fortune” fame.

Ortega is best known for starring in Netflix’s “Wednesday.” She strengthened her box office clout by appearing in 2024’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Next up is “Death of a Unicorn,” a horror comedy that premiered at SXSW and will open in theaters this month, as well as “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” a thriller that features The Weeknd and Barry Keoghan. She’s also scheduled to star in Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel “Klara and the Sun” alongside Amy Adams.

Russell earned rave reviews for her performances in Trey Edward Schults’ “Waves” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All.” She also appeared in Netflix’s remake of “Lost in Space.” Her upcoming roles include “Hope,” a sci-fi thriller, and a remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair” alongside Michael B. Jordan.

The original “Single White Female” was a box office hit when it was released, earning $84.1 million against a $16 million budget. The InSneider first reported that Ortega and Russell were in talks for the new film.
