ICE Raids Impacting Farmworker Communities Across California
The Trump administration continues its immigration actions in California. And while targeted sites have varied in recent days, it appears immigration officials are now focusing on farms in the southern part of the state.
United Farm Workers said there have been multiple federal immigration “enforcement” actions involving farm workers in multiple regions of California including Ventura, Kern, and Tulare counties. “What is going on is madness. What is going on is cruelty. What is going on is disrupting people’s lives, separating families,” said Teresa Romero, President of United Farm Workers. “It’s inhumane. It’s not who we are in this country. I wanna believe that we’re much better than that.”
The Department of Homeland Security declined to confirm specific locations to the LA Times. Romero is highly critical of the Trump administration’s actions. “It infuriates me because if he wants to get rid of criminals, why is he going to the places of work? If he wants get rid of criminals, I can tell him where to find them. Go to prisons. These people already were tried. They had presented evidence. They had an opportunity to defend themselves. And they were convicted and they were given a sentence,” she said “These people that they’re picking up from work, these people are hardworking people who are putting food on our tables every single day.”
