Book bars have become New York’s latest craze.
While New York City has a long-standing reputation for being a party town, a new type of social experience has been becoming increasingly popular: book bars.
Book bars are redefining New York City’s social scene, merging the solitude of reading, the productivity of teleworking, and the indulgence of a good drink or good company. Millennials are slowly aging out of the clubs and looking for new and more chill spaces to socialize with friends or have a moment of relaxation. These hybrid spaces are carving out a niche for New Yorkers who crave a more intimate setting than the usual hustle of the city’s bar scene.
What makes these spaces special is their ability to cater to a wide spectrum of interests. Readers, remote workers, and social butterflies alike can find joy within their walls. As someone who regularly needs a change of workplace from my living room, it’s been a treat finding places where I can take meetings from 9 am to 5 pm and then immediately order a glass of wine and catch up on my favorite novel.
These establishments offer more than just books and beverages; they provide a sense of community and belonging for many. From poetry readings to themed trivia nights, book bars encourage patrons to connect with one another and rediscover the joys of literature. Here are some of the best book bars New York City has to offer.

Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn, Liz’ Book Bar is a cozy retreat that feels like stepping into your coolest friend’s living room. Opened in summer 2024 by author Maura Cheeks, this spot has quickly become a favorite for locals in the neighborhood. This spot pairs a curated selection of books with a menu of craft beers, natural wines, and seasonal cocktails. The vibe here is laid-back and very welcoming, making it perfect for an afternoon of solo reading or a low-key meet-up with friends. The bar also hosts regular author events and book clubs, so you can engage with your favorite writers or discover new ones.
Since its opening, Liz’s Book Bar has increased in popularity, and I imagine it will only grow bigger. My favorite part of Liz’s Book Bar is their signature “Literary Libations” menu, where drinks are inspired by classic novels. Yes, that means sipping on a “Tequila Mockingbird”—pun intended.
INSIDER TIPArrive early on the weekends if you want to beat the crowd and secure a comfy spot.
Bibliothèque is a must-visit for book lovers. Located in SoHo, this chic space doubles as a bookstore and wine bar. Founded by writer AJ Jacono and his father, a notable plastic surgeon. When describing the inspiration behind Bibliothèque, Jacono said: “We imagine ourselves as an upscale third space where anyone can engage with a great book, sip a delicious glass of wine, and chat with interesting people who share the same passion for the finer things in life.”
Finer is exactly what you get when you step through the doors. The robust wine menu boasts an impressive selection of over 700 varietals and 3,000 bottles and in the evenings, they transition from a self-service café to full-service wine bar and have a “no-laptop” policy so that you have no choice to unplug from work and enjoy the vibes. Staying engaged won’t be a problem because in addition to the array of books they offer, they also host events such as game nights, author events, speed dating, and movie nights.
If you’re looking for a book bar with a serious literary pedigree, The Center for Fiction in Downtown Brooklyn is it. This nonprofit literary organization combines a bookstore, cozy café, and a writer’s studio in a vast and open space. The Center is for readers and writers looking for a chill spot to get through a few chapters in a book or write their own. The café serves coffee, wine, and light bites, so you can stay hydrated and nourished during your stay. They also offer a membership that provides access to discounted events, bookstore purchases, and reading groups, as well as an exclusive lounge and library.

What I like most about the Center for Fiction is the abundance of tables and seating, so you can work alone or even sync up with some friends or colleagues. The Center for Fiction hosts writing workshops, author readings, and panel discussions, making it a hub for the city’s literary community.
Book Club Bar has been one of the most popular and trendiest book bars in the city. True to its name, Book Club Bar in the East Village is a space designed for readers and socializers alike. By day, it’s a quiet spot to enjoy coffee, get some work done, and flip through their selection of new and used books.
By night, it transforms into a lively bar scene, serving cocktails, beer, and wine. The ambiance is unpretentious and welcoming, with tons of comfy seating and warm lighting that invites you to stay for hours. They’re known for their “book swap” nights, where patrons can trade their old reads for something new. Whether you’re here to work, unwind, or meet fellow book lovers, Book Club Bar has a little something for everyone.

If you’re looking for a dope place to spend the afternoon reading some stimulating literature, you’re going to need to head to The Lit. Bar in the Boogie Down. As the only indie bookstore in the Bronx, it’s a vibrant space that celebrates diverse voices and the power of storytelling. This woman-owned space is more than just a bookstore and wine bar for locals; it’s a movement.
The Bronx has always had its own unique culture, and its evident throughout this establishment. The décor is as bold as its mission, with colorful murals and cozy seating that invite you to settle in with a glass of wine and a good book. This was the first ever book bar that I visited a few years ago, and it was such a warm and welcoming atmosphere that I found myself back a week later and with friends. Owner Noëlle Santos, a Bronx Native, has created a space that feels like home for the Bronx community, offering everything from book signings to wine tastings and even karaoke nights. The Lit. Bar’s tagline, “Get Lit(erary),” perfectly captures its blend of culture and fun.
Tucked away in Carroll Gardens, Sullaluna is a hidden gem that combines a children’s bookstore, a café, and a wine bar all under one roof. Arriving on the scene in summer 2024, it’s quickly been establishing itself among the growing list of new book bars in the city. What makes Sullaluna stand out from other venues is its focus on children’s books, as well as titles in both English and Italian, an obvious ode to their first location in Venice.
During the day, it’s a family-friendly space where kids can explore a curated selection of children’s books while their parents enjoy coffee and pastries. By evening, it transforms into a cozy wine bar with a relaxed atmosphere perfect for adults seeking a quieter night out. In the summer, snagging an outdoor table means you can people-watch while enjoying your drink and book. With its emphasis on illustrated books, Sullaluna is the type of place that will allow your inner child to resurface and thrive. Their wine list features organic and biodynamic options, and the staff is always happy to recommend a pairing for your book of choice. Sullaluna’s unique blend of offerings makes it a truly one-of-a-kind spot in the city.
