Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democrats, appears on track to become the country’s tenth Chancellor. The far-right AfD is expected to secure second place in the election. With widespread concerns over the economy, security, and immigration, only 18% of Germans feel the country is heading in the right direction.
