Eminem Joins Group Bid to Bring WNBA Expansion Team to Detroit: Report

Eminem is looking to bring women’s professional hoops to his hometown. According to Sportico, Slim Shady joined a group seeking a WNBA expansion team in Detroit.

The bid reportedly includes Em alongside powerful business executives and sports team owners such as group leader and Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores. Owners from the other city’s franchises like the Red Wings, Tigers and Lions are also onboard.

Billboard has reached out to reps for Eminem for comment.

According to The New York TimesThe Athletic, more than 10 cities formally submitted bids to secure an expansion WNBA team ahead of February’s deadline from the league.

Many of those bids are reportedly supported by current NBA owners and came from Charlotte, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Austin, Philadelphia and Nashville.

Sportico reports that the league was expected to pick one expansion city, but that number could increase to three due to demand. This is also on top of the San Francisco, Portland and Toronto expansion teams joining the WNBA in the coming years.

In addition to Eminem, sports dignitaries from Detroit rounding out the group include former NBA star Grant Hill, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, General Motors CEO Mary Barra and more, according to the publication.

Eminem has long been a staunch supporter of everything Detroit sports. From the Pistons to the Lions, Em is a familiar face at sporting events in the Motor City.

Detroit is in the midst of a sports renaissance of sorts, with the Detroit Lions making the NFL Playoffs in back-to-back seasons, while the Detroit Pistons are on pace to post their first winning season since 2015-2016.
