Drew Barrymore and Billy Idol reminisce over their ‘club days’ in the ’80s

It’s a nice day for Drew Barrymore and Billy Idol to reminisce over their old clubbing days.

The Wedding Singer actress, 50, and “White Wedding” singer, 69, reflected on their wild evenings spent partying it up in New York City together in the 1980s during Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. Despite being a literal child at the time, Barrymore grew up going to clubs like Studio 54 with her mother and even threw her 10th birthday party at a bar.

“Please, control room, tell me you have the picture of me and Billy at Limelight, the club,” Barrymore exclaimed as a black-and-white photograph (above) of a young Barrymore and Idol was displayed on the screen behind them. “Yes! I mean, Billy, that is where I see us when I think of you in my mind is back in the old club days. What the hell do you remember from those days?”

“Not very much,” Idol confessed as he looked back at the image. Barrymore, who was holding onto his hand, jokingly replied, “Me neither — I was hoping you could color stuff in for me.”

Still, she remembered her time spent hanging out with the Grammy-nominated punk rocker fondly. “The only thing I knew,” Barrymore said, “was that I loved you, I got to hang out with you, we were obviously playful and silly.”

Idol explained that their dancing days came at a time in New York City history “where things were particularly free.” He continued, “It was a really incredible time. I really enjoyed those ‘80s years. New York was kind of bankrupt so anything kinda went. It was like post-apocalyptic… you felt like the end of the world had sort of happened.”

The pair wouldn’t cross paths again until Idol made a cameo appearance in Barrymore and Adam Sandler’s 1998 rom-com, The Wedding Singer. “I was so excited to be together again,” she said of their onscreen reunion. “It felt like, ‘Oh! Just yesterday we were like, out in the clubs together!’”

Barrymore closed out their conversation by marveling over the pair’s decades-long connection and how much time had gone by since they were dancing with themselves in NYC.

“I’m really a little speechless. I’m really in a very nostalgic sort of avalanche in my mind,” Barrymore said. “I was saying — Billy and I were talking in the break — it just doesn’t feel like any time has gone by. I feel like we’re back in the club, we’re at The Wedding Singer, we’re doing our thing. You don’t look any different. You look good!”

She continued, “God, I miss dancing so much. I miss the clubs! And those places played, as we said, every type of music, but you really pushed through and… changed the world. We all thank you for that.”

Idol agreed, adding, “It was a super fun time.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS.
