Does Parker Posey’s ‘The White Lotus’ character actually know what country she’s in?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The White Lotus season 3, episode 5, “Full-Moon Party.”

Victoria Ratliff (Parker Posey) “flew over the North Poooooole” on her way to her family’s vacation in Thailand on The White Lotus. But does the Lorazepam-guzzling, elitist Southern housewife actually know what country she’s in?

Over the course of Sunday’s episode, “Full-Moon Party,” while her two sons Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola) were off getting into some scandalously incestuous debauchery, Victoria was (as per usual) blissfully — perhaps even willfully? — unaware of the indecency happening in her so-called “perfect” family. She still has no idea that her entire world is about to come crumbling down thanks to her husband Tim’s (Jason Isaacs) past financial crimes (or, even worse, that he’s the one who’s stealing her benzos). Instead, she was focused on her daughter Piper’s (Sarah Catherine Hook) sudden declaration that she was moving to Thailand after graduation to fully immerse herself in Buddhism and develop her spirituality (“Piper, nooo!”).

As Victoria tried to dissuade Piper from following her passions, she misidentified the country they were currently in multiple times, calling it Taiwan and China. Piper’s reaction — a horrified, “What?!”— sums it up pretty nicely. So Entertainment Weekly asked Posey herself if her character actually knows where she currently is while on her lavish vacation.

“It doesn’t matter,” Posey says with a smile. “Victoria gets on the plane and is just going to land. They usually go to the Caribbean, and so this is just a long flight for her, to a country that she’s going to land, in a place where she can get massages and eat delicious food at night and get to bask in her perfect children and work out her own issues.”

While Posey’s weekly inspired line-readings in her exaggerated Southern drawl have made Victoria the breakout comedy character of the season, the actor doesn’t believe that her character is a “superficial person” … despite all the evidence to the contrary (though she does laugh at how she’s made her totally “meme-able”).

“She’s so snobby [but] I think there’s a lot going on underneath her that we get to see and explore,” Posey explains. “And it’s so wonderful when writers do that, and what you see is a person. There’s a whole underbelly and universe inside them. The exterior is just the imagination of the person getting through their reality of what they want. I think they, both Timothy and Victoria, have a lot of desire to make their reality their own, and the kids have suffered that, and she’s not quite seeing it. So maybe what has happened has been like a gift, whether or not Victoria will realize that, or who knows. But I love that kind of arc.”

The White Lotus season 3 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and streams on Max.
