Disney’s (DIS) Moana 2 registered the highest five-day opening of all time, the company said, making an estimated $221 million between Wednesday and Sunday and marking the latest hit for the entertainment giant this year.
The movie’s box office receipts easily surpassed the $125 million to $135 million analysts had estimated for the sequel to 2016’s Moana. The new film has made $386 million globally, Disney said.
According to Disney, Moana 2’s haul beat the five-day opening record of $204.6 million made by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie; surpassed Frozen’‘s $94 million total for a Thanksgiving opening weekend box office; and topped Frozen 2‘s second weekend of $125 million in 2019 for the all-time highest five-day Thanksgiving weekend box office.
“Moana 2 has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said.
The company said its movies now make up the top seven opening Thanksgiving weekends and nine of the top 10.
‘Moana 2’ the Latest Disney Hit Film This Year
Disney’s movies now make up the top three openings this year in the U.S., with Moana 2 joining Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Universal Pictures’ Wicked also has enjoyed significant success since its Nov. 22 debut, having brought in an estimated $262 million in the U.S. and $359 million globally, according to box office tracker Comscore.
Disney shares, which are up slightly in premarket trading, have gained 30% this year.
