TK: ‘It was hard to photograph this two-person opera because at the dress rehearsal only John Relyea’s Bluebeard was in costume – the soprano was ill (and in fact she had to withdraw from opening night – a staff director, Crispin Lord, acted the part, giving a strange androgynous twist to Bartók’s already unsettling opera). This scene, to me a temptation scene, shows the lure of gold.’ Read our review
