CinemaCon started rocking when during Disney’s presentation, exhibitors got their first look at Jeremy Allen White as the boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. The first trailer for “Deliver Me from Nowhere” premiered on the Colosseum stage in Las Vegas on Thursday, and it looks like The Bear is now Born to Run.
White and Jeremy Strong, who plays Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau in director Scott Cooper’s film, took the stage to present the first look at the film, which showed White as Springsteen recording a song from his seminal album “Nebraska,” describing it as wanting it to feel like you’re in the room with him. Strong’s Landau describes in hushed tones what Springsteen is striving for with the album and why it’s not about topping the charts with this one.
“Bruce is a repairman, and what he’s doing with the sound is he’s repairing that hole in his floor, he’s repairing that hole in himself, and once he’s done that, he’s gonna repair the entire world,” Landau said.
Then it rocks out. We see White on stage singing “Born to Run” and getting fittingly sweaty as he careens through the song.
Bruce himself previously praised White’s performance, saying he sings “very well” in the film, and what we saw in the trailer was a blend of some of White’s own voice and Bruce’s.
Strong also celebrated Landau and his influence on Springsteen’s career: “It’s just incredible to be here with this movie. Jon was deeply invested in Bruce as an artist, but he was deeply invested in his friend’s happiness and well being and struggling with mental health. I see Jon as Lewis to Bruce’s Clark, and their collaboration,” he said on the CinemaCon stage.
Cooper wrote and directed the film based on Warren Zanes’ book, and the film also stars Stephen Graham, Paul Walter Hauser, David Krumholtz, Gaby Hoffman, and Marc Maron. Disney’s 20th Century Studios is releasing it in theaters later this year.
