Canadian singer changes lyrics to national anthem at U.S. vs. Canada hockey game to protest Trump remarks

Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk changed the lyrics to her country’s national anthem when she sang it Thursday at a big hockey game between them and the United States, in protest.

She was taking a stand against U.S. President Donald Trump‘s comments about making the country the 51st state, her rep confirmed to the BBC. Instead of belting out, “true patriot love in all of us command,” she sang, “true patriot love that only us command.” And it wasn’t an accident.

The singer also posted a photo of the revised lyrics written on her hand to social media, along with a defiant message: “In this very peculiar and potentially consequential moment I truly believe that we must stand up, use our voices and try to protect ourselves,” Kreviazug wrote. “We should express our outrage in the face of any abuses of power.”

Kreviazuk, who hails from Winnipeg, is known in America for her song “Feels Like Home,” which appeared in the 2003 movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the hit romantic comedy that starred Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, and for her album at the time, What If It All Means Something, which landed on the Billboard 200 chart in May of that year.

The artist’s lyric change did not go unnoticed. The crowd at the venue, TD Garden in Boston, booed her loudly. The teams have a storied rivalry, regardless of anthems.

Trump posted on social media before the game, writing that Canada “will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished and very important, Fifty First State.”

Canada ended up winning the game, 3-2, in overtime.
