The Boston Celtics basketball team has been sold for a U.S. sports record $6.1 billion to a group led by William Chisholm, co-founder of private equity firm Synchrony Technology Group.

Pending approval from the National Basketball Association’s other team governors, Chisholm’s group will acquire a majority stake in the team this summer, according to a release Thursday. The team’s current governor, Wyc Grousbeck, will remain in his role through the 2027-2028 NBA season, serving as a partner to Chisholm.

A group including Grousbeck’s family bought the team in 2002 for $360 million, and said last year they planned to sell a majority stake in the team shortly after the team won last season’s NBA Finals.

The sale of the Celtics sets a new record for a U.S. sports team, surpassing the $6.05 billion value on the sale of the Washington Commanders in 2023.
