Austin Butler is on the run from gangsters in Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Caught Stealing’ trailer

Austin Butler is learning the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished.

The Golden Globe-winning actor stars as Hank Thompson, a former baseball player turned bartender who finds himself accidentally swept up in an all-out gang war after he innocently agrees to watch his punk-rock neighbor Russ’ (Matt Smith) cat in the new trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller, Caught Stealing

The clip, which debuted on Wednesday, follows Hank and his girlfriend (Zoë Kravitz) as they watch over Russ’ cute cat and apartment. Everything changes, however, when two thugs come to visit and promptly beat the ever-loving heck out of Hank at the front door.

And, as it turns out, they’re just the first of a collection of uninvited and increasingly dangerous guests to the apartment. Subsequent clips show Bad Bunny threatening a bruised and boxer-clad Hank, and Regina King trying to help the unintentional accomplice out of the pickle that he’s suddenly found himself in.

“These guys you’re messed up with? They’re scary monsters,” King says, to which Butler replies, “I don’t know anything.”

When Russ returns, he brings Hank into his $4 million dollar crime scheme. “Everyone gets a cut,” Russ says. “The Russians, the Puerto Ricans, the Hebrews.”

“So what happens to me?” Hank asks. Russ simply responds: “You’re f—ed.”

But Hank isn’t planning on going gentle into that good night. He can be seen fighting for his life in a restaurant, sprinting down streets, wielding a baseball bat, and speeding throughout New York City.

“I need to know that you’re a guy who can take care of his s—,” Kravitz says. To which Hank replies, “I can handle it.”

Adapted from screenwriter Charlie Huston’s 2004 book of the same name, Caught Stealing rounds out its cast with performances from Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, and Carol Kane. In addition to screenwriting, Huston is also serves as an executive producer on the project alongside Ann Ruark. Jeremy Dawson, Dylan Golden, Ari Handel, and Aronofsky are also attached as producers.

Caught Stealing drops in theaters on Aug. 29. Watch the clip above.
