Are You Applying Deodorant at the Wrong Time? Here’s What Derms Recommend

Key Takeaways

  • The best time of day to put on deodorant is when you have clean, dry skin.
  • While early risers should put on deodorant after their morning shower, night owls should do so after their evening bath.
  • You should apply a thin amount of deodorant on clean skin and reapply later on in the day if needed.

We’re heading into the warmer months, aka, deodorant season. Whether you use a stick, roll-on, or spray, you probably want to get the most out of your deodorant and ensure that it’s as effective as possible. Part of doing that is applying your deodorant or antiperspirant at the right time of day. But when is that, exactly? Three dermatologists explain.

When to Apply Deodorant

As it turns out, the best time to apply deodorant isn’t necessarily a particular time of day. “The general rule of thumb should be to apply to clean, dry skin—no matter the time of day,” says Dr. Jeannette Graf, MD, board-certified dermatologist.

Putting deodorant on clean, dry skin will help absorb the product and prevent any odor before it has the chance to form, she explains. When applied to clean skin, the odor-blocking components of the deodorant are most effective, as they’re able to interact with the sweat glands to stop the production of odor, says Dr. Michele Green, MD, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist. However, deodorant won’t be as effective or absorb properly if applied on damp or sweaty skin, Graf says.

The Best Time of Day to Apply Deodorant

Surprisingly, dermatologists had differing opinions on the best time of day to apply deodorant. “I recommend applying in the morning to help tame odor throughout the day,” says Dr. Anna Chacon, MD, board-certified dermatologist. “That way you can feel confident that your deodorant is doing its job and covering any odor for the day.” Similarly, Green says that deodorant has the greatest benefit when used in the morning after showering. “Generally speaking, as the day goes on, your skin is full of more sweat, oils, environmental factors like pollutants, dirt, grime, etc., making it not as clean for application as in the morning,” Chacon says.

Graf has a different take. “The best time of day to apply deodorant is on clean, dry skin before bedtime, since the body is at rest and not generating sweat to combat the action of the deodorant,” she says. This is in part because it prevents odor from sweat before you start engaging in activity, she explains.

How Often Should You Apply Deodorant?

Most people need to apply deodorant daily to prevent odor from sweat and remain fresh, Graf says. However, if your sweating is more severe, you may want to apply deodorant both in the morning and at night for cumulative results, she explains. In fact, according to Graf, deodorants that are clinically tested are applied twice a day. “It becomes less effective later in the day if you are already sweaty or haven’t washed off the product from the day prior,” she says.

What about if you get sweaty or notice some odor during the day? “Deodorant should be reapplied as often as necessary for you to feel clean and fresh,” Green says. “When you notice a smell or feel like the deodorant has worn off, then it’s time to reapply.”

However, Chacon cautions against applying too much deodorant. “A thin layer to cover the underarm area once daily is typically all you need without having to reapply,” she says. If you do need to reapply, don’t go overboard, as too many layers won’t make the product more effective, but instead will leave you with buildup that can transfer onto your clothes, Chacon explains.

Though it may take some trial and error, eventually you’ll figure out when to apply your deodorant for maximum protection. “Everyone will benefit from deodorant differently, so what works for one person will be different from what works for another person,” Green says. “The best practice is to listen to your body and apply it whenever it makes the most sense for you.”
