‘Adolescence’ Trailer: Stephen Graham Reckons with His Accused Murderer Son in One-Shot Limited Series

Stephen Graham is continuing his one-shot TV prowess with filmmaker Philip Barantini — except this time, it’s for the small screen.

Graham reunites with his “Boiling Point” director Philip Barantini for yet another story told in one continuous shot. While “Boiling Point” was a BAFTA and BIFA-nominated feature, Graham and Barantini turn instead to four-part Netflix limited series “Adolescence” to film in real time.

“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” alum Graham plays a father whose 13-year-old son (Owen Cooper) is accused of murdering one of his classmates. Each episode of the crime drama “unfolds in real time,” as the series description stated.

The official synopsis reads: “‘Adolescence’ tells the story of how a family’s world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school. Stephen Graham takes on the role of Jamie’s father and ‘appropriate adult,’ Eddie Miller, while Ashley Walters stars as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe. Erin Doherty joins the cast as Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case.”

Faye Marsay, Christine Tremarco, Mark Stanley, Jo Hartley, and Amélie Pease co-star.

Lead actor Graham co-created and co-wrote the series along with Jack Thorne (“The Swimmers,” “Joy”). “Adolescence” is executive produced by Mark Herbert and Emily Feller for Warp Films, Graham and Hannah Walters for Matriarch Productions, Thorne for One Shoe Films, Barantini for It’s All Made Up Productions, and Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, and Nina Wolarsky for Plan B Entertainment.

Carina Sposato (Plan B Entertainment), Peter Balm, and Niall Shamma (Warp Films) serve as co-executive producers. The producer is Jo Johnson.

The 2021 film “Boiling Point” followed chef Andy Jones (Graham) through a hectic hour and a half in his popular London restaurant. Barantini collaborated with cinematographer Matthew Lewis for the feature.

In 2023, it was announed that Barantini would direct “The Last Drop,” a film starring James McAvoy about a functioning alcoholic who must go sober or lose everything. 21 Laps and Fifth Season were set to produce. The project was delayed due to the strikes.

“Adolescence” premieres March 13 on Netflix. Check out the trailer below.
