Watch Selena Gomez present Steve Martin and Martin Short with their SAG Awards after both missed the event

Since Steve Martin and Martin Short couldn’t make it to the SAG Awards, Selena Gomez brought the ceremony to them.

More importantly, the actress brought two gilded statuettes to her Only Murders in the Building costars, so they could finally celebrate their victory from the February awards show.

While filming the upcoming fifth season of the hit Hulu comedy, Gomez joined forces with series creator John Hoffman, and fellow star Michael Cyril Creighton to surprise Martin and Short with their trophies. The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards saw the cast awarded for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, with Short picking up an additional win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.

“We’re about to give Steve and Marty their SAG Award,” Gomez whispers to the camera in the above video.

“It’s a surprise,” Hoffman adds. “They don’t know it’s coming. Cross your fingers they don’t say anything too inappropriate.”

The trio then creep up behind the actors, both lounging in chairs, with Gomez dramatically announcing, “And the SAG Award goes to… Steve Martin and Martin Short.”

The surrounding crew members then showered the actors in cheers and applause as they took hold of their SAG statues.

“Oh look at this!,” Martin exclaimed.

In a callback to a hot topic from awards night, Short fell to his knees, mocking the weight of the SAG award statues.

Then, holding up one of the statues for a mock acceptance speech, Short said, “I would like to thank the Academy and everyone in the crew whose names… I just don’t know.”

Short’s actual “acceptance speech” went quite differently at the awards show. The Only Murders star did not come to the stage when his name was called in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series category, prompting some confusion from presenters Joey King and Jack Quaid.

“Well, well, well, I don’t see,” King said, looking out at the crowd, before realizing what was happening: “Oh, there’s the teleprompter! Martin Short could not be here tonight.”

Short was unable to attend the ceremony after contracting Covid-19, he confirmed to Entertainment Weekly “The honor of being in Only Murders In The Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given,” he said in a statement. “The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so so much.”

Meanwhile, Martin was absent due to a scheduling conflict. Luckily, Gomez was present to accept the ensemble win alongside cast members, Creighton, Molly Shannon, Richard Kind, and Kumail Nanjiani.

“We never win! This is so weird! Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care,” Gomez joked. “Thank you to Marty and Steve for helping raise me. But I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody, the writers, everyone deserves this. I take it home for all of us, and I’m bringing this back to New York for season 5.”
