With only three seasons, many are still pining for more episodes of the cult celebrity satire “The Other Two,” but at least one person thinks the show ended where it was supposed to. Speaking in a recent interview on Variety’s “Just for Variety” podcast with Marc Malkin, former star of the series Drew Tarver shared that despite the desire for more of him, he has no need to revisit Cary Dubek.
“It felt like a good conclusion to those characters. I love that show,” Tarver said. “I love Cary Dubek, but once he had that really dark third season, it did feel like maybe this has come to a natural end. He’s kind of in a good place. Is he going to start bopping around and doing these storylines, trying to be an actor again? So, I was really happy with how it ended and his journey. But it was a really, really fun show.”
While there was some controversy over whether the show had ended prematurely as a result of complaints made against creators and showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider for their behavior on-set and in the writers room, Tarver told Malkin that the third season had been written to be the show’s last.
“They had written the season before we started filming,” he said. “So we knew that that’s how the show, you know, those characters were going to end. So I think it was always like, this is the conclusion of the show. But never say never.”
As an out bisexual man, Tarver considers himself fortunate to have played characters that reflect his authentic self, both with “The Other Two” and in his latest role as Sandy Gordon on the Netflix sports comedy “Running Point.” The show also features Kate Hudson as Tarver’s older sister, as well as Scott MacArthur, Justin Theroux, Max Greenfield, Brenda Song, and Jay Ellis.
“I’ve been very lucky to play nuanced, complicated queer characters on TV,” said Tarver. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to hide this or whatever. I think I got very lucky to get cast in ‘The Other Two.’ And now Sandy is a nuanced, complicated, queer character, and playing him is a real dream.”
“Running Point” is currently streaming on Netflix.
