“Heathers the Musical” is returning to New York after an extended run in London and throughout the United Kingdom.
The show will play a limited engagement through Sept. 28 at New World Stages, producers Bill Kenwright LTD., Paul Taylor-Mills and Jerry Goehring announced on Monday. The return to New York is a coming home of sorts. “Heathers the Musical” originally opened in Los Angeles for a sold-out run in 2013 before transferring Off-Broadway to New World Stages in 2014.
The show features book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy (“Reefer Madness”) and Laurence O’Keefe (“Legally Blonde the Musical”). Andy Fickman, who staged the U.K. production, will direct the New World Stages show. A new U.S. cast and additional creative team members will be announced in coming weeks.
The show is based on the 1989 cult favorite film by Daniel Waters that starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Like the movie that inspired it, the show is a dark comedy about a high schooler named Veronica Sawyer who is unexpectedly taken under the wings of The Heathers — three beautiful, cruel and popular classmates. That’s when she becomes entangled with a rebel named JD, who has some murderous plans for how to get back at the the Heathers.
The authors revised the show for the 2018 London premiere, incorporating several new songs and script changes, which will be heard in New York for the first time. “Heathers the Musical” won the 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for best new musical and in 2022 was filmed for streaming on the Roku Channel. Since its premiere, “Heathers the Musical” has attracted a passionate fan base known as the “Corn Nuts,” named after the cryptic final words of ringleader Heather Chandler.
