One of Logan Paul’s Most-Prized Pokemon Cards Could Be Up for Sale

When he’s not being a YouTuber, wrestler or entrepreneur, Logan Paul is a big-time Pokemon collector. And he might be ready to let one of his most-prized cards go.

Paul acquired the card, a rarity known as a “Pikachu Illustrator,” in 2021 for about $5.3 million, which the Guinness organization has called the most-expensive private sale of a Pokemon card ever. In a recent video on YouTube—where Paul has more than 23 million followers—he said he’s considering putting it up for sale.

“I’m thinking about letting it go, potentially exchanging hands for the right person,” he said. “So if that buyer is watching, reach out to me.” (The full video is at the bottom of this article.)

Paul, known to wear Pokemon cards around his neck, sported this one at his WrestleMania debut and frequently flashes it in videos. He got it in a swap, exchanging another Illustrator card—with a lower grade for its condition—and $4 million, chronicling the deal in a 2022 video.

“Collecting is part conquest, part investment, part fandom,” toy executive Jeremy Padawer, who was featured in the 2022 video, told Investopedia. “I know Logan to be driven by all three things.”

Paul’s Card Is Considered a ‘Grail’ Item

The card is considered one of the rarest Pokemon collectibles around.

Illustrators came to be after a Japanese magazine ran a contest in which 39 winners received a card drawn by Atsuko Nishida, designer of famously cute Pokemon character Pikachu. (Two other Illustrator cards were released in 2017.) Paul’s is believed to be in the best condition of any known Illustrator card, lifting its value.

A multimillion-dollar sale of Paul’s Illustrator would be the latest big-dollar transaction involving collectible cards. A 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for more than $12 million is considered the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever. A “Magic: The Gathering” card sold for $3 million in April; a recent eBay search showed several Pokemon cards listed for more than $1 million.

Paul, who in his video did not say why or how he would sell the card, or the price he would expect, did not respond to Investopedia’s request for comment. On Instagram, he has called the amount he paid for his Illustrator “an absurd amount of money for cardboard.”

Still, Padawer—who considers Paul’s card a “grail item”—says it’s not uncommon for prized collector’s items to change hands. “Maybe items like this aren’t meant to be enjoyed by just one person for an entire lifetime,” he said.
