Nicolas Cage’s ex sues actor for enabling son Weston Cage prior to alleged assault

Nicolas Cage is being sued by his ex, Christina Fulton, one year after their son, Weston Coppola Cage, allegedly attacked her.

Fulton, 57, filed the civil complaint on Tuesday at the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County, per court documents obtained by PEOPLE, accusing Cage, 61, of negligence, negligent supervision, and negligent undertaking. She claims that an April 2024 altercation with Weston, 34, left her with “severe and life-threatening injuries” and is additionally suing her son for assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and negligent infliction of emotional distress. 

Last July, Weston was arrested on charges of felony assault, in connection to an April incident in which he allegedly punched two victims multiple times, causing injury. LAPD confirmed that two counts of assault with a deadly weapon were filed against Weston by the district attorney, but did not confirm if this was regarding the dispute between Weston and his mother that allegedly took place on the same day.

Initially, Fulton denied reports of an altercation and stated that Weston experienced a “mental health crisis.” After his July arrest, Fulton claimed she was “brutally assaulted” during a dispute with him, adding “it is imperative” that Weston “receives the help he desperately needs.”

Now, Fulton is seeking unspecified damages from the two Cages for the “catastrophic physical, emotional and economic harm she has endured” as a result of the “unprovoked attack” by Weston. She further alleges that the elder Cage was aware of Weston’s “long history of mental and psychological disorder” and “of committing violent assault and battery” but continued to enable his bad behavior and support him financially.

Fulton claims that Cage’s financial assistance has included bailing Weston out of jail on several occasions and paying for his downtown Los Angeles condo. She additionally accuses Cage of failing to make sure Weston received “necessary psychiatric” help, and contributing to his “reckless” lifestyle, by drinking alcohol with him “despite knowing [Weston’s] substance abuse history.” (Weston has previously been open about his struggles with substance abuse and was arrested for a DUI in 2017.)

The complaint states, “Nicolas knew or should have known that Weston posed a serious and imminent danger to others, including Plaintiff, based on his documented history of violent assaults, substance abuse, and mental instability.”

In a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly, an attorney for Cage responded, “The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous. Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.”

Fulton claims that her injuries from the alleged 2024 altercation included a concussion, multiple contusions, a disfiguring eye injury, dental trauma, PTSD, and psychological damages. 

“These injuries have required extensive medical care, surgeries, and treatments,” the lawsuit states, also claiming that the attack affected her “thriving” modeling and acting career, rendering her unable to film a recent Netflix project or attend promotional events.

Representatives for Christina Fulton and Weston Cage did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.

In November, Fulton also filed a lawsuit against Weston’s ex-wife, Hila Arounian, accusing her of using a “fraudulent restraining order” to prevent Fulton and Cage from seeing their granddaughters.

Weston is Cage’s only child with Fulton, who he dated from 1988 to 1991. The actor is also a father to son Kal-El, 19, whom he shares with third wife Alice Kim, and 2-year-old daughter August Francesca with wife Riko Shibata.
