The OnePlus Open 2 is a no-go for 2025: Is this the end of an era?

Many of us were expecting the upcoming Oppo Find N5 to launch here as the OnePlus Open 2 — after all, the original Open was a rebadged version of the Oppo foldable in 2023. But that won’t be happening in 2025. OnePlus has just announced that it will not launch a foldable this year.

No OnePlus foldable coming in 2025

In a community post on the OnePlus Forum, the company stated that it has “made the decision not to release a foldable this year.” This comes as a surprise because the OnePlus Open was one of the best foldables in the segment. It was more affordable than the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold series while delivering a better form factor.

At launch, the OnePlus Open challenged what you could expect from a book-style foldable. It was released with a minimal crease, a game-changing Open Canvas multitasking software, a wide cover screen, and the best cameras on a foldable phone — all of it at least $300 less than the competition.

When Oppo announced that its Find N5 would be the thinnest book-style foldable in the world, everyone made an educated guess that it would be the OnePlus Open 2. However, ahead of the Find N5 launch, OnePlus has shut down those speculations with its latest post. Unfortunately, there likely won’t be a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in 2025.

Is this the end of OnePlus foldables?

In the community post, OnePlus goes on to say, “Our decision to pause on foldable for this generation does not signify a departure from the category,” so there’s still a chance for the OnePlus Open 2 to happen, but it won’t be this year. There’s no confirmation on why OnePlus made this decision, but it has assured fans that “this is not a step back, it’s a recalibration.”

The Oppo Find N5 is unlikely to launch in the US, but it’s the first time the company is releasing its foldable outside of China. It’s supposed to launch in global markets, including places where OnePlus sold its first foldable. This post could be a way to make sure OnePlus Open 2 speculations don’t steal Oppo’s thunder.

OnePlus has assured that it’s not dropping support for current foldable users. If you have a OnePlus Open, you can expect to receive “regular software updates, security patches, and exceptional after-sales service.”
