Nationwide Mushroom Recall Issued Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

If you use enoki mushrooms in your cooking, you better check your batch. The Food & Drug Administration just posted a recall of enoki mushrooms from Enoki King Mushroom Farm in Ventura, Calif. due to potential listeria contamination.

The Enoki King brand is recalling lot 4877 consisting of 5.3-ounce (150g) packages of Enoki Mushroom (Product of USA). You can find the lot code on the front of the package in black ink. The packaging is marked with the UPC code 860011505600 on the back of the package. The packages are transparent and have “Enoki Mushroom” displayed on the front, with a French translation below it.

Enoki King urges those who have the product to return it to the store they bought it from to receive a refund. If that is not possible, throw the product away, and be sure to wash your hands after touching the packaging and thoroughly clean everything it touched to eliminate the spread of the bacteria.

The product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes during a routine testing by the Maryland State Department of Health. Listeria is a pathogenic bacteria that can cause a serious, sometimes fatal disease called listeriosis when consumed. For some, the disease can have mild symptoms and only last a few days. But Listeria can be especially dangerous for pregnant people, very young and elderly people, and those who have a compromised immune system.

Since the range of severity is wide, it is important to consult your doctor if you develop any symptoms, which can include headaches, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, convulsions, stiff neck, and/or confusion.

For any additional questions about the recall, you can call Enoki King at 718-290-6617 Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.
