For those that worship at the altar of Mindy Kaling, February brings good news.
The comedian’s latest project, “Running Point,” is a 10-episode comedy series starring Kate Hudson. When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla (Hudson) is put in charge of the L.A. Waves, one of the most famous NBA teams — and a family business. Also starring Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Jay Ellis and Max Greenfield, the show is the easiest of easy binge watches, with a bunch of comedians (and fun famous cameos!) set loose to do their thing.
For a laugh-free experience, this month also finds Robert De Niro in his first regular TV role, when the limited series “Zero Day,” also starring Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Angela Bassett, and Connie Britton comes to the platform February 20.
Here’s the logline: “Respected former U.S. President George Mullen, as head of the Zero Day Commission, is charged with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that has caused chaos around the country and thousands of fatalities. As disinformation runs rampant and the personal ambition of power brokers in technology, Wall Street, and government collide, Mullen’s unwavering search for the truth forces him to confront his own dark secrets while risking all he holds dear.”
Bold timing given, well, everything, but look for it to dominate streaming charts following the drop.
Top Pick: “Apple Cider Vinegar”
We love a scammer — at least on TV. Netflix goes back to the “Inventing Anna” well, this time telling the story of Australian wellness influencer Belle Gibson (Kaitlyn Dever), who scammed people out of a ton of money selling health supplements while falsely claiming she had brain cancer. The six-episode limited series, also starring Alycia Debnam-Carey, Aisha Dee, and Ashley Zukerman was created by Samantha Strauss. With the tagline “a true-ish story based on a lie,” expect to hit Wikipedia after each episode to learn the full story. (Or pick up the non-fiction book upon which the series is based, “The Woman Who Fooled the World,” by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano.)
