‘GMA’ host Lara Spencer tells ‘Night Agent’ star not to call her ‘ma’am’ during live interview

Good Morning America host Lara Spencer has issued a playful decree to interview subjects: Please don’t call her “ma’am.”

Actor Gabriel Basso — star of Netflix’s action series The Night Agent and performer who played VP-elect J.D. Vance in Hillbilly Elegy — received the notice Wednesday morning, as he sat with Spencer for a live GMA interview pegged to season 2 of the TV project.

“That’s why people love you, you’re so authentic, you’re very true to yourself and true to your craft. Everything I’ve read about you has just been incredibly complimentary, and the show speaks for itself. It is a pleasure to meet you. I hope you’ll come back,” Spencer told Basso at the end of their interview, after he stressed that he does his own stunts whenever possible to enhance the “immersive” quality of the show.

Shortly thereafter, Spencer, 55, urged Basso to, “Come back, please!”

The 30-year-old actor replied, “Yes, ma’am!” which prompted Spencer to throw up her arms and laugh as she said, “Oh, don’t call me ma’am!”

Another person on set also reacted to the quip, with someone shouting, “Oh!” from off-camera.

Basso’s appearance on GMA comes amid news that actress Brittany Snow will play a significant part in season 2 of The Night Agent, which sees Basso’s Peter Sutherland tracking a CIA agent to Thailand after the government source is suspected of peddling secrets overseas.

“Like season 1, this season starts off simple and then grows more complicated and intertwined as the episodes progress,” showrunner Shawn Ryan previously told Entertainment Weekly of the upcoming season. “Classified information and the people who steal it, sell it, and use it connects all our various storylines.”

GMA airs weekday mornings on ABC. The Night Agent returns to Netflix for season 2 on Jan. 23.
