Unfortunately, your emotional support water bottle might just be a health risk. According to a statement issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 2.6 million Stanley travel mugs were recalled nationwide due to multiple instances of burn injuries caused by the product. “These mug’s lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” the CPSC says. With 91 reports worldwide—including 16 lid detaching instances in the U.S., 38 burn injuries worldwide, two burn injuries in the U.S., and 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention—Stanley recommends customers immediately stop using the recalled travel mugs and call the company to receive a free replacement lid (with shipping included).
“This recall involves all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the United States,” the CPSC says. “The recalled double-walled mugs were sold in a variety of colors including white, black and green, in 12 oz., 16 oz. and 20 oz. sizes with a polypropylene lid.” Burn victims placed hot liquids inside their Stanley, resulting in injuries and burn marks due to their faulty lids.
