Meghan McCain wishes ‘healing’ to President Biden following prostate cancer diagnosis

Meghan McCain put aside political differences Sunday to wish former President Joe Biden healing and strength after his cancer diagnosis.

“Cancer is the absolute worst. It is hell,” the former View co-host and daughter of the late Republican presidential candidate John McCain wrote on social media. “Wishing nothing but healing, prayers, light and strength to President Biden and his family. I don’t believe times like these are appropriate for politics.”

Biden’s office issued a statement Sunday afternoon noting that last week, the career politician and 46th president of the United States “was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing urinary symptoms.” He was diagnosed on Friday with a form of prostate cancer that the announcement described as “aggressive,” but that also “appears to be hormone sensitive, which allows for effective management.”

“The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” the statement concluded.

Biden has largely retreated from the public eye after he stepped back from the 2024 presidential election and ceded the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to pursue the presidency. His health became a major subject of discussion in the lead-up to that contest after he began to exhibit what many deemed signs of cognitive decline, leading to calls for him to resign. But last February, the results of his annual physical exam deemed him “fit for duty.”

At 82, Biden would have been the oldest president in American history at the time of his re-election. That title instead went to Donald Trump, who defeated Harris at the age of 78.

McCain joined a chorus of voices expressing their concern for Biden, and sympathies with his family.

President Trump issued a short statement via his Truth Social platform that read, “[Melania Trump] and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Just yesterday, Trump savaged his former running mate on the same platform, referring to him as “hapless and cognitively impaired.”

Harris issued a statement, noting that she and husband Doug Emhoff are “saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time.”

The California politician, who is reportedly currently weighing a run for governor of that state — or even another presidential bid — continued, “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
