‘Mass casualty event’ declared as tornadoes hit Kentucky and Missouri



At least 21 people have died as tornadoes hit two US states, according to local officials.

At least 14 people have been reported dead in Kentucky, its governor Andy Beshear said, while seven have died in Missouri.

More than 5,000 homes were damaged in St Louis, the city’s mayor Cara Spencer said on Saturday, with five dead there.

Kentucky officials described the situation as a “mass casualty event”.

The storm system began devastating parts of the Midwest late on Friday.
